2023 finds Deap Vally reclaiming its legacy anew – even as the band concludes the journey it began just over a decade ago. Not long after a chance meeting in a knitting class, the duo of Julie Edwards (drums and vocals) and Lindsey Troy (guitar and vocals) unleashed Deap Vally’s first release, 2012’s ferocious “Gonna Make My Own Money” single, on the tiny U.K. indie, Ark Recordings. From that auspicious launch, Deap Vally went on to spawn three albums of powerful, idiosyncratic, maximally minimalist rock – SISTRIONIX (2013), Nick Zinner-produced FEMEJISM (2016), and MARRIAGE (2021) – that played by their own rules.

Vancouver’s FRANKIIE, is psychedelic in the way that makes the best works of psychedelia timeless, existential, and exciting. The record’s sonic world, which weaves between reverb-soaked dream-pop, vintage classic-rock, bedroom-psych, and beachy shoegaze, presents the dreamy and the real as one continuum between which there are no borders, and where magic abounds all over.

For the better part of a decade, LA’s scrappy rock n’ roll mystics Death Valley Girls have used their music as a means of tapping into a communal cosmic energy. On albums like Glow In The Dark (2016), Darkness Rains (2018), and Under the Spell of Joy (2020) the band challenged the soul-crushing banality of modern society and celebrated “true magical infinite potential” through a collage of scorching proto-punk riffs, earworm melodies, far-out lyrics, and lysergic auxiliary instrumentation. But on their latest album Islands in the Sky, Death Valley Girls’ songwriting mastermind Bonnie Bloomgarden uses the band’s anthemic revelries as a guidebook to spiritual healing and a roadmap for future incarnations of the self. And while these may be the loftiest aims of Death Valley Girls to date, the resulting music is also by far their most infectious and celebratory.

LSD and the Search for God have become a cult band in their own right. Their sound weaves heavily around the shoegaze genre with both front-man Andy Liszt and guitarist, Chris Fifield congregating about 50 effects pedals between them, this positioned the duo as both elegant dancers as well as musicians - it was a real multi-discipline art.

For fifteen years, Pile’s evolving take on rock has earned the group one oft-repeated superlative: “your favorite band’s favorite band.” Ceaseless touring took its members from Boston’s basement circuit to international festivals, hitting loftier technical apexes with each new record. Maguire—the fastidious composer, evocative guitarist, and potent voice behind the solo-turned-punk project—gives musical body to his interior world in scream-along-able lyrics that skew surreal.

There was a recent memorial event/show in Detroit, to honor Rachel Nagy and her passing over to the other side. The Detroit Cobras featured at the event. A few weeks prior to the event, Marcus Durant (Zen Gorilla, MC50) approached Mary with the idea of having him sing a few songs. He even presented her with a demo tape of some DCs songs where he'd had Rachel's vox removed and he recorded his over.
Mary had had no plans of replacing Rachel, but this got her to thinking and after listening to the tape, she agreed to have him join them. It went well - REALLY well - and they are now looking at playing more together. Not that Rachel can ever be replaced, but they're hoping to be able to keep the band's fire burning.

Equally inspired by classic psychedelic pop and modern indie rock, the new album finds the band branching out and incorporating shoegaze, post-punk, and dream pop influences into their sound. The resulting album calls to mind the effervescent melodies of labelmates Sugar Candy Mountain, the ghostly atmosphere of Papercuts, and the twisted pop sensibilities of Chris Cohen.
